China PCBA quote desks do not fail projects because they misunderstand the philosophy of a bill of materials. They fail quiet hours later because the spreadsheet cannot be purchased: missing MPNs, merged designators, "or equivalent" with no list, and capacitors specified by value alone. A manufacturable BOM is a procurement and SMT document, not a schematic export left unedited.
If your competitor's article stops at "BOM is important," stop reading it for production use. What matters is which fields prevent delays.
Columns that make a quote actionable

Optional but useful: distributor orderable part numbers, life-cycle status, and max height. Unit cost columns help your internal estimate; they are not a substitute for MPNs.
Passive lines are where overseas BOMs usually break
"100nF 50V X7R 0402" is better than "0.1uF cap," but still weaker than a primary MPN plus two approved alternates with the same dielectric class and voltage. MLCC DC bias, height, and flex-termination options do not appear in a bare capacitance number. Resistors need tolerance, power rating (or package with derating intent), and sometimes sulfur-resistant construction called out.
Connectors need full MPNs including plating and mating orientation. Mechanical hardware (standoffs, screws) belongs on the BOM if the assembler must supply it.
Designator hygiene and ECO survival
One row per unique MPN with a designator list (R1, R2, R5) is clearer than fifty duplicate rows--unless your ERP demands otherwise. Never reuse designators across revisions without an ECO note. When a part is not stuffed, keep the line with DNP rather than deleting it; placement and test fixtures often still care that the pads exist.
For substitution policy during shortages, align with your component substitution guidance and put the approved list on the BOM itself.
What to send with the BOM for a China quote
Gerbers or ODB++, pick-and-place / centroid, assembly drawings with polarity, stackup notes, and quality requirements (SPI/AOI/X-ray, ICT, functional). Upload the package via how to place an order. Expect engineering questions on lifecycle NRND parts, long-lead MCUs, and footprint mismatches; those questions are cheaper than a wrong reel on the feeder.
